PTSD & Trauma

What are Mental Trauma and PTSD?

Mental trauma is a lasting emotional and psychological response to distressing or life-threatening events. Although not everybody will respond the same way, potentially traumatic experiences include accidents, natural disasters, abuse, neglect, or the sudden loss of a loved one, among other things. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a specific mental health condition that can develop in people who experience trauma. For a diagnosis of PTSD, symptoms must persist for more than a month and significantly impair daily functioning.

Symptoms of PTSD may include:

Re-experiencing the trauma through flashbacks or nightmares
Avoidance of situations or people that remind you of the trauma
Changes in mood or cognition, such as feelings of hopelessness or anger and muted positive emotions
Increased alertness, including difficulty sleeping, irritability, or being easily startled

How Can Therapy Help?

At Rose Hanna Counseling Services, our practitioners offer a variety of therapeutic approaches in Long Beach and online to meet the unique needs of our clients dealing with trauma and PTSD. While each provider has their own specialties, some approaches include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a widely-used approach that helps people identify and change thought patterns related to their trauma that lead them to unwanted behavior. By reframing these thoughts, clients can develop healthier ways of coping and reduce the intensity of their PTSD symptoms. CBT helps clients regain a sense of control over their lives.

Play Therapy

For children, play therapy provides a safe and engaging way to express their feelings and experiences related to trauma in a way that comes naturally to them. This therapeutic approach fosters healing and resilience, allowing children to improve their emotional regulation, self-respect, and social skills.

Attachment Counseling

Attachment counseling focuses on understanding how our early relationships shape our emotional needs. For individuals who have experienced trauma, developing secure attachments is crucial for healing. This approach helps clients explore their attachment styles and how they fit into their current relationships.
